Musically 2015 started off slower than most years but built some great momentum and ended pretty strong. Sadly though, we lost Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister only a few weeks ago. It still feels surreal considering the day he died I returned home from work and told my wife how much I loved the new album and hoped they had 1 or 2 left in them. Even though Lemmy and Motorhead leave 22 studio albums and 40 years of of rock ‘n roll in their wake it’s still sad seeing such a legend pass. His influence has definitely touched what we create here in these comics and I’m sure we’ll see some Lemmy sprinkled in throughout the years to come.

For a long time I’ve wanted to try an write some game reviews. If you’ve been reading the comic for a while you’ll notice a few stories themed around reviews or lists. Even though I’ve had these ideas to write more about games I never really had the push to actually follow through with anything really tangible. That was until my friends over at Digital Nerdage started looking for some outside contributors for extra content. I figured doing a review here-and-there for some friends and great podcasters might be the push I need to start writing more about games.
Now, I’m not trying to be a big games journalist and I’m actually not really writing what are traditional reviews. But, I do like talking about games (especially the weird ones) and there are a lot of games that fall threw the cracks here at Side Quest. Not every games have a funny punchline or crazy story; sometimes a great critique and recommendation is all a game needs. For now and for how ever long I can, the games that I just want to recommend and chat about will be over at Digital Nerdage. <link the page again>
Please read my reviews for Heart Beaten and The Armor Machine Soldiers.

Back in February I started the long process of compiling a print edition of Side Quest. I went back and forth for a while about where I wanted to start with a print version and it seemed the best option was to start from the beginning. You’d think that was a pretty straight forward place to start, but with all the changes we’ve made to the comic along the way I wasn’t 100% sold on starting from our start. I questioned would people want to read a 6 year-old comic. But, when I finally got the printed versions in my hand I was so happy with my decision.
Now these books aren’t just straight copies from their web versions. When Paulie and I started the comic back in 2008 we where figuring almost everything out as we went along. We’re are still learning and growing to this day but at the beginning things were rough. So, for most of the winter and spring I went back into each comic and relettered, fixed and tweak any dialogue issues. It took me up until mid-May to finish it but once it was done both Paulie and I were very proud of the 28-page issue.
We brought them to this years Cherry Capital Comic Con (C4) and were really happy with their performance. People seemed to really resinate with out first issue and general vibe of the book was very positive. Because things seem to be going so well I’m probably going to be starting on issue two very soon and maybe push to have that out early next year. If you are looking to get a copy you won’t have to wait long. We’re currently looking into a few digital store fronts and once one is set up I’ll make it well know. And, we’re even planning some very special give-aways once our shop is up and running.
Stay tuned,
Jarv.
Even though we kinda fell off on posting comics over the last few months, the state of Side Quest is actually pretty good. It’s crazy to think that June 6th marked the one year anniversary of me being a part of Unlawful Good: An Anthology of Crime by Dude, What? Comics. You can get a copy for yourself here. It was a wonderful experience working on the comic and it has continued to be a great experience selling the book and meeting fellow Unlawful Good creators and comic fans.
This past Cherry Capital Comic Con (C4) there was a spirited camaraderie with all the creators in the book. Whenever we’d sell a copy of the book we’d always encourage the buyer to walk the show floor and get autographs from the other artists/writers at the show. This created a lot of great opportunities to drive traffic to different areas of the con, meet new people, and get a feel for what the fans liked about the book.
Once again, I can’t say enough kind words about Dude, What? Comics, especially our editor Heather Antos, and of course all of the comic creators that were involved with Unlawful Good.
There has been a few other things getting in the way of us posting comics regularly. But, I’ll get to those next week.
Stay classy,
Jarv
Hey, you guys! I found myself watching a bit of TV this week and man did I get caught up in the commercials. I’m probably like 90% of all Americans and just DVR the TV shows that I watch, so I normally can just skip right past the commercials and not have to worry about them. But this week I had a bit more time available so I was able to actually watch some live TV, and man do I love the drug commercials. You know the ones where the two old people are in bath tubs out on the beach. Or the one for Viagra where the couple is going out to dinner, but you really know that the guy is just self conscious that he is going to have either a flaccid piece after dinner or pop a ragging mega boner during the appetizers. But hey that’s the dance, you have to buy here dinner before the love making happens. Sorry guys, I don’t make the rules, I just live by them.
While I can go on for hours about some other life lessons from these commercials, I really wanted to focus more on the side effects that are always listed at the end of the commercials. I know everyone has seen them. Yes, take this pill and it will help with depression, but you will get heads aches, blotchy skin, sweat profusely, have and odd odor, fall asleep randomly, possible die, and have anal leakage. I thought it was hilarious that half of the side effects usually could lead to the reason you would need to take the drug in the first place.
After watching numerous commercials I realized two things. Number one: why the hell do we have drug commercials? Shouldn’t we go to the doctor and they will tell you what drugs you should take? They must love when someone comes in and tells them what they should take. Like they did not spend forever in school and training to be the expert in these situations, but hell, you saw some TV and you know just as much as they do.
Number two: I wonder what would be listed if you put the side effects together for our comic. As you all know Jarv and I have no problems making fun of ourselves and almost everything around us. So, everyone hit us up on Facebook or twitter with any side effects we should include in our list. I would love to get this put together for you next week. So, let me get you to this week’s comic so you can get those ideas flowing. So enjoy and until next week.

Paulie
Hey, you guys! We are off to another new year, and yes, we are still here! Now I was not sure where I wanted to go with the this years first Blog, until I was at the grocery store the other day. It is not often that I am shocked by others behaviors, I usually pride myself with being a stand out for strange behaviours. But, while I was taking a stroll through the grocery store I happened to see a young lady with a pregnancy test in her hand. I normally don’t perv out and check chicks out in the feminine hygiene aisle, but something about the pregnancy test just caught me off guard. Maybe because she was so young, or because I am a dad and it got me thinking about my kid, but it was something. Then it happened! This girl held the test up by her scared to death face and took a selfie! She then either sent it in a message to someone or may have posted it to a social media site, either way, I was totally shocked what had just happened. What has happened to the world today? I guess I just thought there might be some moments you just want to keep private. Hashtag I might be a teen mom might not be a Kodak moment (totally dated myself with that reference). You would the fear of becoming a parent would be enough to remember for a lifetime, not nowadays, it’s not a real moment until the proper filter and vignette has been apllied.
Now, to move onto the comic, we are planning on getting as many comics out this year as possible. I do want to let you know for the next little bit we’ll be featuring the last five pages of Ayleen #0. That way we can put a little more time into some great Side Quest comics. So, enjoy both comics and until next time…

Paulie

Hey, you guys! I was looking for a few things to talk about this week, so I was out trolling the web a bit. When out of the blue I decided to do a quick search for ‘Side Quest Comic’ and see what comes up. I was shocked to see the multitude of comics showing up using the Side Quest title in on way or another. I like seeing new comics coming into the fold but if you’re going to rock the Side Quest name you better bring it. This Side Quest Comic crew is built to last.
But on a different note, I was really excited at the images that came across. We had some great images of the comic that came up, plus a few pics of our ugly mugs. But, then I saw something really cool, there are actually some photos of the other artists that were around us at some of the Cons we have been attending. Comics, like any other entertainment business, can have it’s rough edges but I’m happy to say everyone we’ve met and became friends with are some amazing people. Creating comics is a tough business so I give everyone at those Cons all the credit in the world. They are out there putting it all on the line and toughing through the rejection, bad conditions, and hang overs that would stop normal people. So to all of you guys keep on keeping on.
Now in a strange twist I was surprised to see Chuck Norris and Ivan Drago showing up in my ‘Side Quest Comic’ search. I guess they could represent us. I just wonder which one of us is old Chuck Norris in the Canadian tuxedo. Or who is Ivan Drago in the russian military outfit. Well, while I try to solve this mystery why don’t you guys get to the comic. So, enjoy, and until next week…

Hey, you guys! As you can seen it has been a bit since we have last posted a comic. In our time off I have to say its been a struggle. The Man has really been holding me down, and the fight has been exhausting. Which has made it tough for me in the last few weeks to even try to be funny. Luckily for the comic Jarv has been there. You can see he has been keeping the state of the comic up, which I have to thank him for.
I am also excited to see his new comic Ayleen hitting the site. For years now we have been hitting the conventions pumping the comic out to everyone, but as you all know, it is really not appropriate for the younger crowd. That is why it is awesome that we can get a comic out not just mom and dad but also for the kids too. That’s right Disney, watch out, you had to buy Marvel to reach a larger fan base. Hell. We are building that on our own from the ground up. I feel I should use a horrible reference to a Drake song now, but I would lose the small amount of pride I have left in myself if I quoted “Started from the Bottom”.
Finally I wanted to thank Jarv just for keeping us alive. Not only is he coming up with new ideas, he is still getting out there and bringing them to the people. I hope some of you have been able to see Jarv while he has been out at a few different Cons over the last few months. If you did miss him check out some of the great sketches he did on our Facebook page, he really broke out of the mold with them. But, before you move on check out some of his other work with this weeks comic. So, enjoy this weeks installment and until next week…

Paulie
